Knud Nielsen Company

Pine Tree SeedKnud Nielsen Company is proud to help promote and support the effort that is underway to restore longleaf forests in the southeastern United States. There are many positive attributes to the longleaf pine and longleaf forest. Some of the most noteworthy are:

  • Insect and fungus resistant (including pine beetles and fusiform rust)
  • Grows well in both poor soil and fertile soil
  • Fire resistant
  • Wind firm (stands up to wind pressure better than other pines)
  • Longleaf forests create better ecosystems for wildlife
  • Longleaf pine straw is the most sought-after in landscaping
  • Longleaf timber produces higher quality lumber and poles

We not only support and promote the planting of longleaf pines we practice what we preach. We have longleaf pines growing on company land as well as family land. Many of our employees have gotten involved as well, choosing to plant longleaf pines on their own property.

Seed Extraction

Knud Nielsen Company Seed Division is a contract Cone and Seed Processor. The company's combination of qualified people and high performance equipment provides customers with quality processing of their seed. Customer satisfaction is a top priority. Highly trained, dedicated personnel stand ready to assist you with seed extraction and conditioning. Call today to schedule your cone and seed processing.

Quality Checkpoints:

  • Yield is measured in terms of pure, live seed.
  • Lot integrity is computer tracked throughout the system.
  • The biological time period dictates the extraction of seed for various species.
  • Accurate sizing and density sorting, confirmed by X-ray, provides the nursery with high germinating seed for planting.

Seed and Seedling Sales

Knud Nielsen Company offers nine different seed sources for your seed needs, including three varieties: Piedmont, Coastal, and Mountain. All seeds are packaged in six mil bags (sturdy enough to be used for stratification) and placed in either fiber drums or wax coated boxes. Both are freezer tolerable.

All seeds come with an up-to-date germination test, seed per pound test, purity test, and moisture content test. Seeds with high moisture will not store well and germination will be affected. All tests are conducted by the USDA Forest Service's National Tree Seed Laboratory, a fully accredited lab as recognized by the International Seed Testing Association (ISTA).

Seeds may be purchased any time throughout the year. New germination tests are usually taken during the winter months. Seeds can be booked and held until needed with a deposit. Some seed sources may be limited, therefore Knud Nielsen Company encourages advanced booking.

Knud Nielsen Company also grows and sells longleaf seedlings. Longleaf seedlings are grown in 5 1/2 inch cells using KNC's own soil blend to ensure good root growth and tight root balls. Knud Nielsen Company only grows to order. No seeds are planted until an order has been received. Orders can be placed from December to March, and trees will be lifted the following December. A deposit is required at the time of order.
